Veterinary Toxicology ===================== þ Decon - Dawn: liquid dishwashing detergent (NOT automatic dishwasher liquid) and repeat several times. - Vegetable oil (or, if needed, mineral oil) - Eyestream or similar irrigant OK; texts say 20 minutes. - Milk, water, milk of magnesia, Maalox used PO for dilution - Can use things the animal normally likes to drink - Emesis most useful in first 30-90 minutes þ Who can't vomit? Rodents, Rabbits (shouldn't make vomit, thin stomach) Not if vomiting, caustics, petroleum distillates (same as humans) Not if history of seizures, cardiac problems. Due to anatomy, vomiting likely safer in animals than in humans. Dogs: Peroxide PO: tablespoon for each 10 lbs, use only twice, max of 3-4 tablespoons. Apomorphine inside conjunctival sac; flush out after starts vomiting. Controversial in cats. NO salt: causes salt poisoning, no dishwashing liquid, no ipecac (doesn't work in animals), no mustard. þ Charcoal - 1-3 g/kg single dose - can give NG þ Tremorgenic Mycotoxins - From eating - In penicillium type molds, including Blue Cheese mold - Cause tremors, seizure - Valium may not be enough - Methocarbamol 55-220 mg slow IV - Pentobarbital 2-15 mg/kg pentobarbital þ Canned Pumpkin - makes a good cathartic, and dogs and cats seem to eat it
