Staph Scalded Skin Syndrome =========================== þ Drugs - Mostly NOT MRSA (2007): use Clinda rather than Vanco þ Blood Cultures - Usually + if strep - Usually - if staph þ Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) - Strep (Group A) TSS: if Varicella AND strep TSS, high mortality þ Synonyms: - Ritter's disease - dermatitis exfoliativa neonatorum þ Rash of Staph Scalded Skin Syndrome - + Nikolsky sign (lateral skin pressure causing) - fisuring periorally, axilla, perineum - raw, weepy lesions þ Treatment of Staph Scalded Skin Syndrome - admit for IV antistaph antibiotics - Penicillinase-resistant penicillins are considered standard therapy in cases of SSSS, but the prognosis is good even when antibiotics are not used. - Antibiotics have not been shown to alter the course of SSSS.
