Short Gut ========= þ D-Lactic Acidosis - Patients with an anatomically shortened small bowel may develops lactic acidosis secondary to D-lactic acid. - Patients may present with an anion gap acidosis and coma. - caused by bacterial fermentation which produces D-lactic acid. - It occurs in patients with an anatomically or functionally shortened small bowel. - This acid is not detected by the usual test for L-lactate. - Treatment consists of neomycin or vancomycin.
