Poisoning: Phenol ================== þ Phenol in general - acrid odor - solid powder or liquid - known also as carbolic acid, phenylic acid, phenyl hydrate, - foun in: + Creolin (combination cleaner) + Cresol + Creosote + Campho-Phenique + Chloraseptic - absorbed through skin and lungs þ Effects of Phenol Exposure - CNS depression and seizures - may produce skin burns - chronic exposure known to cause "carbolic murasmus" in 1800s, as used for skin disinfectant: headache, vertigo, salivation, and skin pigmentation changes. þ Treatment of Phenol Exposure - don't dilute or use lavage/ipecac: may cause more harm by increasing absorption. Suggested to use olive oil or ehylene glycol
