Splenic Artery Aneurysms ======================== þ Splenic artery aneurysms - epidemiology - 4 times more common in females than males. - Only 2% of splenic artery aneurysms rupture, - of those that do, 95% occur in young females during pregnancy. - Splenic arteriovenous shunting during pregnancy causes the aneurysms in these young women. [Rosen 3rd ed. p 1433] þ Splenic artery aneurysms - clinical features - Most commonly, these aneurysms are asymptomatic. - When symptoms arise, they are vague, causing left upper quadrant or epigastric discomfort. - Occasionally there will be radiation of pain to the left shoulder or subscapular area. - Interestingly, since most of these aneurysms are less than 2cm in diameter, they are generally not palpable.
