NEJM 1985;3112:1035.] þ Epidemiology of Wernicke's - up to 12% in some alcoholic populations - diagnosis made premortem in only 20% of cases. þ Classic Triad of Wernicke's Disease - Eye Signs + horizontal nystagmus + lateral rectus palsy + "blank stare" + "cross-eyed" - global confusional state + NOT agitated or hyperactive as with DTs or withdrawal from EtOH; + withdrawn, inert, indifferent - cerebellar ataxia
